Dell to Double Indian Workforce

BBC
Mon March 20, 2006

Computer giant Dell plans to double its Indian workforce to 20,000 over the next three years.

Chairman Michael Dell said there was a "fantastic opportunity to attract talent" in India.

Dell is planning to open a new production facility in India, to add to its three call centres and two testing and development units.

Mr Dell said the US firm had yet to decide where in India to build the factory but was talking to politicians.

"We have been in discussions with a number of state governments in terms of infrastructure and logistics," he said.

Fast-paced economy

Dell's latest aim of 20,000 Indian workers is an increase on its previous 15,000 target announced in January.

"We will ensure a major recruitment push in engineering talents," said Mr Dell.

A growing number of Western firms are switching facilities to India, where there is a plentiful supply of skilled, English-speaking workers.

The influx is helping to fuel India's fast-growing economic expansion.
