ATLANTA — In early October, Southern Company, the parent company of Georgia Power, announced thousands of its customers’ data was breached after a cyberattack.
Now, a Georgia resident has filed a class-action lawsuit against the company over the exposure of the customers’ private data.
As Channel 2 Action News reported, the majority of the customers impacted were Georgia residents.
Georgia Power said at the time that the hack impacted 400,000 accounts tied to its parent company, Southern Company.
Of those 400,000 accounts, 300,000 were Georgia Power customers.
The main plaintiff named in the suit alleged that Southern Co. owed its customers a duty to encrypt and more reliably protect their information and accounts, as well as saying the company should have worked to better identify possible threats.
The lawsuit says the class are seeking award of actual, exemplary, punitive, compensatory, statutory and nominal damages.
The plaintiffs are also requesting award of attorneys’ fees and court costs, including for the testimony of expert witnesses, as allowed by law.
Plaintiffs have requested the case go to a jury trial on all claims.
