Major gas line problem causes 70 EXPLOSIONS in homes outside of Boston

Officials in Massachusetts say at least 50 fires have been reported in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover after problems with the natural gas system.
Fire Chief Michael Mansfield said 25 to 30 active fires were in progress in Andover and at least 18 in Lawrence. Officials are urging residents to leave their homes if they smell gas.
'There are multiple basement fires in Andover. It's some kind of gas issue,' said Lt. Edward Guy, spokesman for the Andover Police Department. 'We urge residents if they are smelling gas to get out of the house and contact 911. We will get units out there.'
Residents in Andover received a robo call on Thursday evening asking them to shut off the gas in their homes.
According to The Eagle Tribune, officials have alerted Holy Family Hospital in Methuen to expect multiple admissions.
Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon says there are 20 to 25 homes on fire in Lawrence.
Solomon, who's in Lawrence, says there are so many fires 'you can't even see the sky.'
The Eagle-Tribune newspaper in North Andover reports at least one home has been demolished and several others have caught fire amid a problem with a gas line that feeds homes in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence.
Massachusetts State Police say troopers are responding to the area to help secure areas after 'multiple suspected gas explosions.'
Lawrence Police Chief Roy Vasque told The Eagle-Tribune that he's 'never seen anything like this.'
The newspaper reported that some neighborhoods were being evacuated.
It was not immediately clear whether there were any injuries.
Update: Number of explosions has been raised to at least 70.
