Woman Thrown in Georgia Jail After Lawn Care Complaint

GAINESVILLE, Georgia - A Gainesville woman was put behind bars, lost her job and asked to pay a fine and it all started with a complaint about her lawn care.

"To me it was crazy, it was one of the worst things I ever had to go through," said homeowner Amy Parker.

Parker was pulled over by a police officer last Friday night.

"I thought everything was fine, my license, my insurance, title to the vehicle. And they tell me I have a warrant out of Barrow County," recalled Parker.

Parker said she had no idea what the warrant was for and was taken to jail. It took Parker's husband four days to pay the fine to get Parker out of jail. Parker lost her job because she couldn't show up for work.

Parker later found out that she was arrested because she didn't mow her lawn.

Parker lived in Barrow County four years ago and a neighbor complained because the grass in her yard was excessively high.

The county code enforcement wrote Parker a ticket for $290 and Parker said she paid it. What Parker didn't pay was a $35 office fee that she said she knew nothing about.

With late fees, that $35 bill ballooned into $325. A judge signed a warrant for Parker's arrest.

"[Because] I would've gone and taken care of it, something so simple, I would've taken care of it," said Parker.

Now, Parker has been left with a nasty grass stain on her record.

"If I would've done something and I feel like I need to be there, to be paying the price for it, OK. But there wasn't [anything] I was paying for."
