At a press conference in Washington, US President George W Bush pronounced former South African president Nelson Mandela dead.
The president was defending his Iraq policy, stating that former Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein's brutality had made it impossible to unite the country.
Making a point, Bush said, ''I heard somebody say, 'Where's Mandela? Well, Mandela's dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas.''
A spokesperson of the Mandela foundation later said the 89-year-old leader is very much alive and Bush's comments were made in the context of America's problems in Iraq.
